Smith.ai Alternative
A simpler, flatter way to answer every call.
Smith.ai is a capable service. But its per-call pricing model and national-scale operation aren't always the right fit for a small local business. Here's an honest comparison.
TL;DR: If you're paying $285–$750/mo for call-answering and watching the overage charges add up, Oak City Intelligence Concierge does the same job for $149/mo flat — no per-call fees, no scripts, trained on your actual business. It's AI-native and Raleigh-based. The trade-off: no live human fallback (AI all the way through), and we're newer.

The pricing math
Smith.ai's per-call model works well if your call volume is perfectly predictable — you buy a block, you use it. The problem is that call volume isn't perfectly predictable. A seasonal rush, a promotion, one busy week — and you're paying overage rates on top of an already-high base.
OCI Concierge is $149/mo regardless of how many calls come in. For a trade shop that gets 80 calls one month and 200 the next, that's a real difference. For a business that's just starting to hand off inbound to an AI, it's a lower-risk way to find out if it works.

Human agents vs. AI
Smith.ai uses real US-based people to answer your calls, assisted by AI. That's a genuine strength: when a caller is confused, upset, or the conversation goes somewhere unexpected, a human can adapt in ways an AI script can't. If you handle sensitive situations — healthcare inquiries, legal matters, high-stakes sales — that human layer matters.
OCI Concierge is AI all the way through. The trade-off cuts both ways: the AI doesn't have bad days, doesn't need breaks, and is identically consistent at 3am as at 3pm. It's been trained on your specific business — your services, your pricing, your policies, the things you'd tell a new hire on day one — rather than working from a generic intake script. For most service-trade businesses (HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, property management), the conversations are predictable enough that AI handles them cleanly.
National service vs. local partner
Smith.ai operates nationally. That's fine for a product you set up once and largely leave alone. But when something needs tuning — the AI said something off-brand, a new service needs to be added, your hours changed — you're working a support ticket with a large remote team.
OCI is based in Raleigh. John built the system and is reachable directly. Tuning happens in a conversation, not a ticket queue. That matters more than it sounds when your business is your reputation and the AI is answering your phone.
Who should pick which
OCI Concierge is a better fit if…
- You want one flat price, no surprises on the invoice
- You're a service-trade business — HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, property management
- You're in or near Raleigh and want a local partner, not a national vendor
- Your calls follow predictable patterns (leads, appointments, FAQs)
- You're comfortable with AI — no human fallback, but consistent 24/7
- You want the system trained to your business, not a generic script
Smith.ai is a better fit if…
- You need a live human fallback for complex or sensitive calls
- You're outside the Raleigh area and don't need local support
- You handle healthcare, legal, or financial inquiries with compliance requirements
- Your call volume is low and predictable (a small block fits cleanly)
- You need HIPAA compliance documentation
- You're wary of AI answering directly and want human oversight
Honest limitations of OCI Concierge
We'd rather you know these upfront than find out later:
- No live human agents — everything is AI. If that's a dealbreaker, Smith.ai is genuinely a better choice.
- Currently in private beta — not yet open to the public. You join a waitlist and we bring you on when a spot opens.
- Raleigh-area focused — we work best with local businesses where we can have a real relationship. We don't try to be a national platform.
- Integrations are growing — CRM and calendar connections are live, but we're still building the long tail. Ask us what you need before assuming it's there.
